Domestic violence survivors are often satisfied with the response from law enforcement and other social services when they ask for help, but survivors from marginalized communities have reported more difficulty, according to a new survey.
In this file photo, Open Arms Center of Hope holds a domestic violence awareness walk in Staten Island, New York. The Ohio Domestic Violence Network released a new survey that found domestic violence survivors from marginalized communities had more difficulty when they sought help.
The ODVN planned the research in 2020, months after a Minneapolis police officer killed George Floyd. The aim was to get a clear picture of how domestic violence survivors, especially women of color and those from marginalized communities, feel about their interactions with law enforcement, the courts, and other parts of the response system.
Women of color who are not Black experienced higher rates of being threatened with losing their children, more than double the rate for white women, the survey found. Some of the women reported that family members could help them interpret, while others reported they were given a pen and paper to communicate.
