Parton and director Bartlett Sher unveiled the news at a press event held at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts on Belmont University's campus. The show will run for four weeks, with preview performances leading up to opening night on August 8th, concluding on August 17th. Following its Nashville run, the production will journey to Broadway , aiming for a New York debut in 2026.
Parton expressed her profound connection to Nashville, stating, 'Nashville has certainly been home to me for over 60 years, it’s been my musical home. It seemed natural and right for me to be able to premiere the story of my life in Tennessee, because I’m Tennessee-born and Tennessee-raised.' The musical promises a captivating blend of Parton's iconic songs from her extensive repertoire, along with newly composed numbers specifically written for the stage. Parton collaborated with writer Maria S. Schlatter on the musical's script.Director Bartlett Sher emphasized the power of theater as a medium to tell Parton's extraordinary story. He shared, 'The theater is a great place to tell Dolly’s story.' Casting details are yet to be announced. Last month, Parton and the production team initiated a nationwide open search for actors to portray different facets of the legendary singer's life across various decades. Producers anticipate casting three distinct versions of Parton — a child, a young adult, and an older adult, as Sher explained. He highlighted the universality of Parton's story, stating, 'In a way, makes a lot of sense for me, because Dolly’s story is everybody’s story, and it wouldn’t of been fair if we hadn’t of made the possibility for everybody to have a chance.' Parton shared her hopes for the audience's takeaway, 'I just want people to feeling like they’ve been entertained, of course. I personally want them to see the person inside of me. The life, the things you go through. The things you truly do have to sacrifice. Everybody thinks it’s all glamorous and glory and money and fame but there’s so much more to a life like mine ... the prices that you have to pay, the miles you have to travel. She added, 'I want 'em go away feeling like, 'Oh, I’m glad I went to that. I feel like I just went to church.
