The Department of Justice will release special counsel Jack Smith's report on alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election but will keep the classified documents section sealed until charges against co-defendants are resolved.
The Department of Justice said it will release special counsel Jack Smith 's report into President-elect Donald Trump alleged efforts to reverse the 2020 presidential election but will keep the rest concealed for now. In a filing on Wednesday in a lawsuit seeking to block the release of the reports, DOJ attorneys said Garland will keep Smith's report on Trump 's classified documents case under wraps while charges against co-defendants in the case are still pending.
The classified documents section of the report will only be made available to the chairmen and ranking members of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees for their private review as long as the case against Trump's co-defendants is ongoing. “This limited disclosure will further the public interest in keeping congressional leadership apprised of a significant matter within the Department while safeguarding defendants’ interests,” the filing said. Garland's decision essentially guarantees the report on the classified documents will never be viewed by the public as Trump's Justice Department is expected to drop the case against his co-defendants, Trump valet Walt Nauta and property manager Carlos de Oliveira
