The Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday welcomed the decision of the Office of the Ombudsman to conduct an investigation with regards to alleged irregularities in handling the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) situation.

“The DOH has been transparent in the COVID-19 response, including procurement transactions and the provision of benefits to healthcare workers,” it said.

Among the issues to be investigated by the Ombudsman include the “delayed” procurement of personal protective equipment for healthcare workers; and the “inaction” of the DOH in releasing and processing of financial compensation to healthcare workers who succumbed or fell ill due to COVID-19. “The Department has issued all checks to the kins of 32 fallen healthcare workers and 19 severe COVID19 patients who recovered, last June 9. New claims to said benefits are being processed to this day,” it added.
