The facility in Toms River is expected to be taken over by Ocean County, officials said.
Animal control vans are parked outside of the Toms River Animal Shelter on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, in Toms River.A municipal animal shelter closed last week as plans are under way to transfer running of the facility to Ocean County, a move that Toms River officials said would save taxpayers about $1 million annually.
Mayor Dan Rodrick said his administration is acting in taxpayers’ best interest, adding Toms River was one of only four New Jersey municipalities with its own shelter for abandoned and rescued animals. Ocean County currently operates two shelters. The most recent records available, from the state Department of Health, show that in 2021, the shelter took in 406 animals. Of those, 151 were returned to their owners, 131 were adopted and 124 euthanized.
Julie Adamek of Toms River said she worries the county will not be able to handle the additional animals coming from the township, noting the number of animals ending up Shore region shelters increases in the summer months. Eight people were laid off from the shelter when it closed. The township is retaining one animal control officer, a 19-year employee, Rodrick said. Calls from NJ Advance Media to a representative of the Toms River Professionals Association AFSCME Local 3168 for comment were not returned.
