Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team has secured read-only access to sensitive data systems at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), raising concerns about potential misuse of information. The access, granted to several DOGE staffers, including Nikhil Rajpal and Gavin Kliger, allows them to view data related to CFPB staff, procurement, and finance. This follows a pattern of DOGE gaining access to various government systems, including those at NOAA and the Treasury Department.
Elon Musk 's Department of Government Efficiency ( DOGE ) staffers are set to gain access to sensitive data at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ( CFPB ), according to multiple sources. CFPB staff received an email early Friday morning informing them that several DOGE employees, including Nikhil Rajpal and Gavin Kliger, along with Chris Young, a Republican political advisor linked to Elon Musk , entered the agency building Thursday evening.
The email stated that these individuals would require read-only access to CFPB data, systems, and equipment. This followed a message sent Thursday by Adam Martinez, CFPB chief operating officer, confirming the DOGE employees' access. \Martinez outlined the specifics in his message, stating: 'DOGE arrived tonight and will be back tomorrow. They are going to need read-only access to our HR (HR Connect/NFC), procurement (PRISM), and finance (Discoverer) system.' He further explained that if DOGE members already had access to BFS/ARC, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service’s Administrative Resource Center, they could potentially pull the necessary data. Otherwise, the CFPB would need to work with them to complete the required forms for access. \The information accessible through these systems includes details related to CFPB staff, such as performance reviews, salaries, and benefits. Sources reveal that DOGE staff has also sought access to procurement and financial data at other agencies. Over the past week, WIRED reported that Musk's DOGE team has gained access to various government systems and infrastructure, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and a sensitive payment system within the Treasury Department. The CFPB email emphasized that the DOGE members would receive CFPB laptops and PIV cards, enabling them to access systems as detailees or employees. It reiterated that their access was strictly read-only. Read-only access allows users to view information but prevents them from modifying it. DOGE could utilize the data obtained from these systems to inform decisions regarding reductions in the CFPB's workforce and spending. Another source confirmed that DOGE members are now listed in the CFPB's internal directory.
