Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) revealed that FEMA spent $59 million on housing migrants in luxury New York City hotels, prompting Musk to demand a reversal of the funds. DOGE claims the payment violated the law and President's executive order, as the money was intended for American disaster relief. Acting FEMA administrator Cameron Hamilton responded by suspending the payments and promising accountability. This incident follows DOGE's recent exposé of the National Institutes of Health spending $700,000 on a Super Bowl binge drinking and baby boom study. DOGE is also set to investigate the Department of Defense's financial practices.
Department of Government Efficiency head Elon Musk on Monday sounded the alarm over a $59 million payment by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to house migrants in New York City.
“Sending this money violated the law and is in gross insubordination to the President’s executive order,” Musk wrote. “That money is meant for American disaster relief and instead is being spent on high end hotels for illegals! A clawback demand will be made today to recoup those funds.” “I want to thank the @DOGE team for making me aware of this,” Hamilton wrote via X. “Effective yesterday these payments have all been suspended from FEMA. Personnel will be held accountable.”
“Washington has been fumbling tax dollars for far too long,” Sen. Ernst wrote via X. “This Super Bowl Sunday, it’s time to blitz the bureaucrats and sack the wasteful spending.”DOGE would soon probe the Department of Defense. The agency has failed financial audits over the last several years.
