Dog trained in accelerant detection joins Akron Fire Department: Meet Phoenix

It’s the first time the department has had a dog among its ranks in its 187-year history, said Phoenix's handler and partner, Gabriel Cotrufo.

. The pup has already earned his keep – sniffing out accelerants used in arson fires, according to his handler and partner, Gabriel Cotrufo.

“We were certified through Maine’s Criminal Justice Program,” Cotrufo said. “We were certified as a team – I can’t work without him and he can’t work without me. He’s trained to alert for accelerants if there are any present by sitting and pointing with his nose. And that helps us in our criminal investigations by allowing investigators to collect evidence to send to the state laboratory to confirm whether or not an accelerant was used.

“Hands down it’s the greatest community program that we have – that’s why we have been funding this for 30 years,” Paul said.
