The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its monkeypox guidance to reflect that dogs are susceptible to contracting the virus after a study reported the first known case of a human-to-dog transmission in France.

A 4-year-old Italian greyhound contracted the virus 12 days after the two men it lived with in Paris began exhibiting symptoms, according to a study published in the Lancet."To the best of our knowledge, the kinetics of symptom onset in both patients and, subsequently, in their dog suggest human-to-dog transmission of monkeypox virus," the study read.

Researchers were able to trace the infection through DNA analysis from one of the men to the one in the dog. The two male owners of the greyhound reported that they had slept with their dog while symptomatic but had not allowed the dog to have contact with other pets or humans. The dog's symptoms of the virus included lesions on the skin and ulceration.
