SAN ANTONIO - TxDOT’s new safety campaign “Be Safe. Drive Smart” is working to promote pedestrian safety by highlighting the story of Katie Parker, who was significantly injured by a careless driver in an accident that killed her dog. In July 2016, Katie Parker and her dog, Riley, were out on a morning run when a driver failed to yield to them while crossing the street at a crosswalk.“Sadly, my dog, Riley, did lose her life that day and save me. I don’t think I’d be here without her. She was on the side where the car hit us. Everyone who was there, at the crash scene, said that Riley jumped and took the impact of the crash instead of me,” said Katie Parker. “I'm lucky to be alive.
922 people died in pedestrian accidents throughout Texas in 2022, making up one out of every five deaths on Texas roads. TxDOT hopes that “Be Safe. Drive Smart,” which came to San Antonio late last year, will remind Texas drivers to watch out for pedestrians, and always follow traffic laws.
