Animated film, Dog Man, surprises with a strong opening weekend, while horror film, Companion, garners positive reviews despite uncertainty in box office performance.

This time last year, Apple's Argylle sent shockwaves through the box office with its disappointing opening. But this weekend, the domestic box office is poised to reach around $90 million, driven by the unexpected success of Universal's Dog Man . The past few years have shown a clear shift in cinematic trends: horror films, once reliable crowd-pleasers, are proving less dependable, while animated movies continue to be incredibly bankable.

This trend played out in real-time this weekend, with Dog Man outperforming its fellow newcomer, the horror film Companion, by more than three times.Produced by Zach Cregger, the director behind the hit film Barbarian, Companion is written and directed by Drew Hancock. The film stars Sophie Thatcher, known for her role in the hit television series Yellowjackets, and Jack Quaid, who gained recognition for his performance in The Boys. Despite opening to positive reviews and holding a 'fresh' 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a 91% audience rating and a B+ CinemaScore, Companion's box office performance remains uncertain, with an estimated $9.5 million earned in its first weekend. In contrast, Dog Man soared to a $36 million opening weekend haul, despite minimal marketing efforts. This marks the second-biggest January debut for an animated film and the third consecutive number-one debut for DreamWorks, based on the popular children's comic book series by Dav Pilkey. The movie received mostly positive reviews, currently boasting a 'fresh' 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Family audiences appear to be eager for animated entertainment, as evidenced by the success of films like Moana 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Mufasa: The Lion King. Mufasa, in its seventh weekend, earned another $6.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $230 million. Notably, the film made around $35 million in its opening weekend, when it faced competition from Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Despite Sonic 3 having a $25 million head start after its opening weekend, both movies are now neck-and-neck.Sony's comedy film One of Them Days, starring Keke Palmer and SZA, claimed the fourth spot with an estimated $6 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to nearly $35 million. Rounding out the top five was last weekend's number one film, Flight Risk, starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Mel Gibson. The movie grossed around $5.5 million this weekend, taking its running domestic total to $20 million. Meanwhile, A Complete Unknown surpassed the $65 million mark, while Den of Thieves 2: Pantera neared the $35 million milestone after its PVOD debut. Steven Soderbergh's Presence, on the other hand, experienced a significant drop, falling by 72% in its second weekend and grossing a little over $1 million
