But this weekend, the domestic box office is poised to reach around $90 million, driven by the unexpected success of Universal's Dog Man . The past few years have shown a clear shift in cinematic trends: horror films, once reliable crowd-pleasers, are proving less dependable, while animated movies continue to be incredibly bankable.
This trend played out in real-time this weekend, with Dog Man outperforming its fellow newcomer, the horror film Companion, by more than three times.Produced by Zach Cregger, the director behind the hit film Barbarian, Companion is written and directed by Drew Hancock. Rounding out the top five was last weekend's number one film, Flight Risk, starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Mel Gibson. Meanwhile, A Complete Unknown surpassed the $65 million mark, while Den of Thieves 2: Pantera neared the $35 million milestone after its PVOD debut.
