Students across the U.S. are demanding that their colleges divest from defense companies which may be aiding Israel in its ongoing conflict against Palestine.
Protesters at the University of Texas at Austin and across the country are trying to stick it to companies for involvement in the Israel-Palestine war.
Divesting an endowment fund can often take a long time, said Sandy Baum, senior fellow at the Urban Institute, which studies college finances. “If they own individual shares, they can sell them,” she said. “Of course, the timing of the sale could have a measurable impact on the value of their endowment. But in many cases, they own these shares as part of index and mutual funds and they would have to divest of the whole fund — a much bigger action than selling an individual stock.”Do UT system schools fund Israel?
