This version may not be in its final form and may be updated.Jessica Toonkel: Can I start with the big ones?Ryan Knutson: There are a lot of streaming services these days. Our colleague Jessica Toonkel writes about them.Ryan Knutson: You're at 13 right now. I'm quite impressed.Ryan Knutson: Jessica was able to name 17 streaming services just off the top of her head. There are so many, each with their own little jingles.
Jessica Toonkel: Right. Exactly. Because that cable provider is the provider for your area. So you had no choice, so you had to stick with it if you wanted to watch the Sunday night football game or American Idol. Jessica Toonkel: Disney made a very big move. Disney actually was very bold and Disney was like, "We're not selling our contents to Netflix anymore." They were the first to say that. "In fact, we're not going to sell our content to anyone. We're bringing everything back and we're going to launch a streaming service." And they were going all in on streaming.
Ryan Knutson: But now that the whole industry has moved to streaming, the options are kind of overwhelming. People have taken a social media to vent. Jessica Toonkel: Netflix has, for the first time in over a decade, seen no growth. You also saw Peacock struggle with growth as well, but growth in the United States is definitely slowing. To be clear, there's still growth outside of the United States. And again, we can't ignore the economic times, we can't ignore inflation. I think that there is a point where people are going to start really wondering how much they're paying for all these streaming services.
Jessica Toonkel: These streaming companies need to continue growing because they all have goals of profitability. So they need to grow their streaming services quickly in order to be profitable. Jessica Toonkel: Disney Plus grew incredibly quickly because you could get Disney Plus when it first launched for a year for free if you had Verizon. And Verizon really promoted that and Disney Plus took off when they launched, and I do think part of that was that bundle.
Jessica Toonkel: It's free shipping on their products, and they recently just announced a deal with Paramount Plus so that Paramount Plus is free if you're a member of Walmart Plus. Jessica Toonkel: So zombie accounts are people who have access to your streaming service through some sort of bundle but never log in and give their information for that account, so they never use it and they're not really worth anything. I mean, you might be getting paid for those accounts, but when the bundle ends, those people go away.
