The EPA released efficiency estimates for the 2024 Ford Ranger. How much gas does it drink versus other trucks?
With the costs of everything around you going up, the one place where you have a choice in saving a little bit is purchasing your next new car or truck. Not so much in initial purchase price, but in the long run of ownership by buying a vehicle that gets decent fuel mileage for what you intend to use it for. With the midsize pickup truck market being a rather popular topic, we look at theObviously, a pickup truck comes with a pair of obvious disadvantages when compared to cars.
With those caveats out of the way, it's still a shock to see that the 2024 Ford Ranger with its 2.3-liter turbocharged I-4 and 10-speed auto coming in at 21 MPG city, 25 highway, and 22 combined for its RWD drivetrain. The EPA also notes that the average MPG for model year 2024 vehicles sold in the U.S. is 28 MPG and shows that the 2024 Ranger is well below average across all vehicles, but so is most anything with a bed in the back.
While not great, it's more impressive when you start adding the option of driving all four wheels, as the 4WD version loses only 1 MPG in city and highway—its combined rating remains 22 MPG. According to the numbers by the EPA, both the 2WD and 4WD EcoBoost Rangers will give you a total of 414 miles on a full tank of 18.8-gallons of regular fuel. Jumping up to the 2.7-liter twin turbo V-6 with its standard 4WD, you drop down to 19/23/20.
It also goes to show just how much of a brick the 2024 Ford Bronco is. Despite riding on similar platforms and using the exact same engines and drivetrains, the 2024 Ranger is the more efficient vehicle. If you don't need tons of tire clearance, you'll be better off in the Ranger as you can always equip it with a camper shell or tonneau cover to protect your valuables in the bed.
