Does Quentin Johnston’s path to WR1 start tonight? FrontOffice33 | NFLDraft | GoFrogs
A First-Team All-Big-12 selection in 2021, Johnston is aiming to build upon a breakout campaign that saw him record career-highs in receptions , receiving yards , and touchdowns despite appearing in just nine-of-12 contests for the Horned Frogs last season. Johnston and his 20.4 career yards per reception average is a big play waiting to happen. The Buffaloes are ill-prepared to hold Johnston in check.
The Buffaloes allowed their opponents to score 26.7 points per contest last season. Opposing offenses encountered little resistance through the air, having averaged 242.3 passing yards per game. Defensive Coordinator Chris Wilson managed to retain his title despite the poor results achieved throughout 2021. Colorado’s defense returns several experienced starters, but the majority of them play in the front seven.
A 6-foot-4, 212-pound legitimate monster on the boundary, Johnston possesses a surprising amount of acceleration given his imposing stature. Opposing cornerbacks are often shocked by how quickly Johnston evens the odds and eliminates their cushion in off coverage. A true thoroughbred of an athlete, Johnston’s overall blend of size, speed, and short-area quickness will demand attention from pro scouts throughout the fall.
Johnston topped 100 receiving yards on three occasions last season, all of which occurred throughout his final five-game stretch. Johnston especially captured national attention by totaling seven receptions for 185 yards and three touchdowns against Oklahoma in a mid-October defeat to the Sooners. Johnston averaged a team-high 19.2 yards per reception. Johnston’s strong finish to the 2021 season indicates the Temple, Texas native is ready to explode in 2022.
Staying healthy throughout the course of the season will also be paramount for Johnston and his reputation moving forward. An undisclosed injury cost Johnston three games last season. It ultimately capped his statistical output and overall effectiveness. Another similar occurrence would have outsiders questioning Johnston’s ability to make it through a full schedule. Johnston will be eager to eliminate any potential durability concerns.
