Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning

Few films of summer 2025 are more anticipated than Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, the eighth installment in Hollywood’s most consistent action franchise. Although it was originally titled Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two, the title was revamped to emphasize that this may be the last time that audiences ever get to see Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt on a big-screen adventure.

Although several decades of superhero movies have trained audiences to stick through the credits in case there is a bread teaser of what is to come, Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning does not contain a mid-credit or post-credit scene. However, devoted fans may want to stick through the credits to recognize the names of the impressive ensemble of stunt performers, especially since the new Academy Award category for stunts won’t be in effect until the year after Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning is eligible. Does ‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ Have a Sequel Tag? Close The Final Reckoning does not contain any overt teasers for another sequel, as many have assumed that it really will be the “final” installment in the series. Although it's always possible that Paramount Pictures will change their minds and try to set up another sequel, it is hard to imagine audiences being interested in a new Mission: Impossible movie that does not star Cruise, as it is his star power and ability to do death-defying stunts that has made the franchise so successful. Cruise appears to be transitioning into a new stage in his career, in which he will return to the more dramatic acting that he did during the 1990s; his next film will be with Alejandro González Iñárritu, the Academy Award-winning director behind Birdman and The Revenant. Posts 3 Although it has always been a very accessible series that allows new viewers to jump in, even if they didn’t see the previous installments, The Final Reckoning does include many homages to the earlier films in the series. Although it was expected that it would pick up the loose threads regarding the assassin Gabriel and the artificial intelligence program known as “The Entity,” which were set up with the cliffhanger of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, the film also contains several montages that allude to Ethan’s earlier adventures. Those who want to go into the film as prepared as possible will certainly want to re-familiarize themselves with some of the older installments in the franchise, especially the Mission: Impossible film from 1996 and J.J. Abrams's Mission: Impossible III. What Is the Future of ‘Mission: Impossible’ and Tom Cruise? The Final Reckoning contains some of the most dangerous stunts within Cruise’s entire career, which is no small statement given his incredible track record. Despite how amazing some of the IMAX footage looks, The Final Reckoning is a bit of a disappointment when compared to the last few installments. The previous installments in the series truly added something unique in terms of style; Ghost Protocol captured the suspense of old-fashioned Cold War thrillers, Rogue Nation had a mystery premise reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock, Fallout served as an epic character study about Ethan’s trajectory, and Dead Reckoning analyzed modern concerns about a reliance on technology. While The Final Reckoning does serve as a “greatest hits” compilation of the saga’s best moments, it does not stand out on its own. It will be interesting to see what both Cruise and writer/director Christopher McQuarrie do next, as the strength of their partnership is what has sustained the Mission: Impossible franchise through its last decade; it's frankly quite impressive that the films have been as consistently strong in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, streaming revolution, and SAG-AFTRA strike. Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning may be an end to an era, but it doesn’t mean that Cruise and McQuarrie are even close to being done working together.Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning PG-13 Action Adventure Crime Release Date May 23, 2025 Runtime 169 Minutes Director Christopher McQuarrie 8 10 Cast Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Mariela Garriga, Hannah Waddingham, Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman, Angela Bassett, Shea Whigham, Charles Parnell Writers Christopher McQuarrie, Erik Jendresen Main Genre Action Powered by Expand Collapse
