Smith, 28, has never been chosen to an All-Star team despite superior offense, game-calling skills.
LOS ANGELES ― Fifty-two major league hitters called themselves All-Stars last year, including those who were voted to start the midsummer classic by fans and those who were chosen as reserves. That’s 40 percent of all hitters who qualified for a batting title in either league.
The 2021 season saw Smith post a still-solid .860 OPS to go with 25 home runs and 76 RBIs. Each of those numbers was better than those belonging to the four National League All-Star catchers: J.T. Realmuto started. Omar Narvaez was the backup who replaced injured Yadier Molina ― who was himself an injury replacement for Buster Posey.
Defense is rarely taken into consideration by All-Star player selectors, but the Dodgers have relied heavily on rookie starters Michael Grove, Bobby Miller, and Emmet Sheehan early in the season. Include reliever Nick Robertson, and the Dodgers’ 26-man roster features four rookie pitchers on their 13-man staff.
