Stop before you hit me with the obligatory “he needs to play every day in the minors” claptrap. Smith can help his own cause and the club’s getting two or three starts behind the plate now in the bigs; more if either Barnes or Martin get a little banged up, which is part of the job description.
The Dodgers have their excuse to keep Will Smith right where he is, on the major league roster, even after saying they would do no such thing. Skippersticking when Austin Barnes returns from the injury list, which he’s scheduled to do tomorrow night in San Francisco.
Los Angeles has its opening now, and Smith should get it. If anything, with the team being left-hand-hitting heavy, there was reason to consider Smith over Beaty based solely on left-right. But it’s an easy call now. Really easy. And Roberts wouldn’t be going back on his word; he’d simply be calling a rather obvious audible. Or, Andrew Friedman would be sending in the play from the sidelines.
He can relieve Barnes in a double switch -- or in a non-double switch in the late or extra innings. He can pinch hit. He can play third base . He can soak up the major league experience. He can talk to veterans Clayton Kershaw and Rich Hill about pitching on a regular basis.about hitting. He can talk to old hands Justin Turner and David Freese about hitting. He can can catch bullpen sessions; major league bullpen sessions. He can work out in a state-of-the-art weight room.
Two to three games per week at catcher works. Same thing for Barnes. The veteran Martin can handle a one-to-two-games-per-week gig for the time being. Forget win-win. This is win-win-win.
