Rookie Bobby Miller pitches six shutout innings while J.D. Martinez and the Dodgers offense have a strong effort to make a .500 trip possible.
The Dodgers might have to revert to a four-man rotation after ace Julio Urías suffers a setback with his hamstring ahead of a 5-4 loss to the Phillies.“The way it started, if we can salvage this trip and go .500 and get to the off day,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, “it’ll be a happy flight.”Already a budding star thanks to his opening trio of impressive outings, the right-hander got better as Saturday’s game went along.
“It’s been good to see how he has just managed emotions, made pitches when he needed to,” Roberts said. “For him to go out there and be efficient, get through six innings, was a big lift.” Since 1901, only eight other pitchers in MLB history have matched his feat of giving up two runs or fewer through their first four career starts . The lone Dodgers on that list: Kenta Maeda in 2016 and Fernando Valenzuela in 1981.
After the Dodgers made eight straight outs to start the game, James Outman sparked a two-out rally in the third with a double high off the left-field wall, his first extra-base hit in 16 games.
