The sudden death of Sen. Lindsey Graham has drawn national attention to a rare but life-threatening medical emergency.

has drawn national attention to a rare but life-threatening medical emergency that physicians say requires immediate treatment to improve a patient's chances of survival. Preliminary findings indicate the 71-year-old South Carolina senator died from an aortic dissection, a condition many Americans were unfamiliar with before Graham's passing.
Speaking with The National News Desk, Dr. Kat Lindley, senior fellow of family medicine with the Independent Medical Alliance, explained why the condition is considered one of the most dangerous cardiovascular emergencies. She explained that the condition occurs when a tear develops in the inner layer of the aorta, the body's largest artery responsible for carrying oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
"What happens is the blood surges through this tear and forces its way between the inner and middle layer of the wall, splitting it apart," Lindley said. "That's what we call the process of dissection. " As blood enters the tear, it can create a false channel inside the artery, restricting blood flow to vital organs or causing the aorta to rupture.
Because the condition can progress rapidly, she emphasized the importance of seeking emergency medical care at the first sign of symptoms.
"It is extremely important if anyone has symptoms of severe chest pain or abdominal pain to get to the hospital," Lindley said. "The closer you are, the better your chances of survival. " Unlike many chronic illnesses, Lindley said an aortic dissection is not something physicians routinely detect during an annual physical examination. Instead, she encouraged patients to manage the underlying risk factors that can increase the likelihood of developing the condition.
"You can test for hypertension. You can check for hyperlipidemia. You can check for diabetes," she said. Lindley noted that many patients who experience an aortic dissection also have significant atherosclerosis, a condition involving fatty plaque buildup within the arteries.
She also explained that the symptoms can sometimes resemble those of a heart attack but may also present differently.
"It can present with severe ripping chest pain," Lindley said. "But another common presentation that people often overlook is severe abdominal pain. " She added that nausea and symptoms resembling acid reflux may also occur, making early diagnosis more difficult. Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes a gastrointestinal illness known as cyclosporiasis.
"So yes, we're having an outbreak of Cyclospora," Lindley said. "It's a microscopic parasite that causes severe diarrhea. " Unlike many common stomach illnesses that resolve within a day or two, Lindley said Cyclospora infections often last much longer and can lead to dehydration. "Many people are having a hard time because usually if you get diarrhea, it goes away within 24 to 48 hours," she said.
"This one is really lingering. " Although Cyclospora cases occur each year, Lindley said the current number of infections appears larger than usual. Public health investigators believe fresh produce, including lettuce and salad greens, may be associated with the outbreak, although no specific food source or recall had been identified at the time of the interview.
"The most important thing is to wash your vegetables and fruit very thoroughly," she said. She also advised cooking produce whenever possible, peeling fruits before eating them, and avoiding raw produce if practical until more information becomes available.
"We don't know exactly where the outbreaks are coming from," Lindley said. "But we do know that it's affecting our fruits and vegetables. " Health officials continue investigating the source of the Cyclospora outbreak while encouraging anyone experiencing prolonged diarrhea, dehydration, or other severe symptoms to seek medical attention.
