As we enter cold and flu season , the medical community wants pregnant women to know it's now recommended they receive the RSV vaccine. The FDA approved it last year. Doctors say the purpose is to protect their newborn from becoming seriously ill.
Landers says infants, in particular, are at risk of becoming severely ill from RSV, sometimes requiring oxygen and a ventilator in the hospital. "The baby, therefore, has these antibodies to protect it from the complications of RSV. So, they might still catch RSV, but they're not going to have the severe complications, such as the hospitalization," Katie Erdlitz, DNP.
"They do not have to be a patient of ours or a mom of the patient of ours. It can be given to anyone in the community," said Erdlitz.
