Ruby Sunday's folk-horror abandonment story made for one of the most emotional episodes in years
is sent to a parallel universe in which she never met the time lord. Today’s episode “73 Yards” – a haunting folk horror – joins that brilliant list.suddenly vanishes, leaving Ruby Sunday to fend for herself. Of course, this is when the requisite monster turns up, taking the shape of a mysterious spectre – blurred to human perception and referred to as ‘The Woman’ – who follows her victims at an exact distance of 73 yards. Her prey just happens to be – you guessed it – Ruby.
Out of Gatwa’s shadow, Gibson does a tremendous job selling the desperate hopelessness of a woman condemned to alienation. The most affecting horror isn’t limited to gore and ghosts, but is about the fears we hold deep in our hearts. The terror here is not in being followed by The Woman, but in the chilling idea of being abandoned by everyone you love – of being completely, utterly alone.
