DoctorStrange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron has explained the timeline between the MCU sequel and WandaVision's post-credits scene, specifically in relation to ScarletWitch. WARNING! Spoilers ahead ➡️
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron clarifies how long it's been since WandaVision’s post-credits scene in the MCU movie. Marvel Studios’ first Disney+ series followed Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch as she inadvertently held an entire town hostage to create an idyllic, sitcom reality where she could be with Vision and conceive metaphysical children in Tommy and Billy .
Despite making things right at the end of WandaVision, the series’ post-credits scene saw the Scarlet Witch studying the Darkhold as her children’s voices echo through the multiverse. When audiences see Olsen’s character in Multiverse of Madness, the Darkhold has turned her fingertips black, her wardrobe even more sinister, and the land around her into a hellscape.
“It’s never specifically defined, but it’s been long enough, though. We’re not picking up the day after that [WandaVision] tag; that’s for sure. So, it’s definitely long enough to really get its hooks into her.” This “long enough” passage of time, complied with the Darkhold’s presence, does explain Wanda’s mindset in Multiverse of Madness. The Darkhold/Book of the Damned, whether it be in Marvel Comics or elsewhere, is almost always depicted as an object of dark magic that corrupts or curses those who read it. Still, for those unfamiliar with comic storylines like"House of M," it’s difficult to simply be told what Wanda has become, rather than shown onscreen.
At a little over two hours, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the shortest MCU film to hit the big screen in years. Some have argued the movie, its characters, and emotional resonance could’ve benefited from another 30 minutes or so of runtime.
