Doc Martin deserved a better goodbye than this underwhelming Christmas special Review: ⭐⭐⭐

A visit to Santa’s cave with wife Louisa and son James took a turn for the Bah Humbug when he noticed Father Christmas had a nasty rash. He hauled Santa aka Leonard off for an emergency biopsy while his grotto was forced to shutter. Meanwhile, bad news arrived with the bombshell that Martin’s mother had died in London.
Christmas telly demands melodrama amidst the mistletoe. It duly arrived as Doc collided with a turkey while driving to make a house call on Leonard. Snowbound and freezing , he received a ghostly visit from his mother. This was a delusion brought about by hypothermia, as he correctly diagnosed. Back in Portwenn, his family wondered whether Doc would make the Christmas parade.
Clunes has always imbued the taciturn Martin with glimmerings of vulnerability, and the grouch was revealed to be a secret softie as he and Leonard arrived bang on time for the festivities. They did so in matching Santa outfits in a car decorated like a sleigh . There was good cheer all around as plumber Al and wife Morwenna announced a baby. Not to be outdone, policeman Joe and ex Janice revealed they were marrying, after he tried to woo her with the collection of birds named in the “12 Days of Christmas”.
