Deer Park boys, Dobie girls capture cross country crowns
Deer Park JV girls runner Ally Marbury accepts her medal from head coach Jim Davis during postrace ceremonies. Marbury captured first place for a 15-minute two-mile run.It wasn't a surprise that the Deer Park boys and Dobie girls repeated as District 22-6A cross country champions, it was the folks who were pursuing them the closest that were the surprise.
"I think the kids ran well today. I think some of them went out a little too hard for two-and-a-half laps. They did well. All seven ran hard, all seven finished in the top 13. Hopefully, we can have a good week of practice next week and get ready for Monday . It should be fun. They accomplished what they set off to accomplish which is our third in a row, I believe," Deer Park head coach Jim Davis said.
Dobie's surprise berth to regionals had the Longhorns go 3-8-15-17-21 for 64 points. Jovanni Avila was first with an effort of 17:52.6. Chris Lopez was next at 18:12, Damian Rosas tallied an 18:58.4, Simon Sepulveda claimed a 19:09.6 and Pedro Acevedo was clocked at 19:17.8. "It was hard but it was all I was thinking about. I made it before so I knew I could do it again," said Horton, who ran an 18:04 but who knows that time must come down if he wishes to obtain the goal of running at state.
The Dobie girls traveled 1-2-3-4-11 through the chute for 21 points and an easy district crown. Those upstart Lady Deer runners secured 49 points and Memorial was third with 76. Deer Park, in hitting the finish line in 6-7-10-12-14, was led by the duo of Kiley Jones and Kaydence Creel . Addyson Paduh gave the team its third runner in the top 10 with a 23:47.3 before Gillian Topping was clocked at 24:3.0 and Peyton Collier closed out the scoring with a 24:37.8.
