Landing at Houston Humane Society in December, the Doberman was dubbed Mistletoe. But...
Houston Humane Society Behavior and Enrichmment Manager Kymee Bair gets a kiss on the nose from Mistletoe, a one-eared Doberman, while posing for a photograph Thursday, March 16, 2023, at Houston Humane Society in Houston. Mistletoe arrived at Houston Humane in December and appeared to be a lost cause. She had been severely abused and would not let anyone near her. Mistletoe has grown to trust again, and as of today, is getting ready for adoption to a loving home.
“The poor girl had been through a lot in her one year of life,” said Bair, the center's behavior and enrichment manager. When Bair assessed her behavior, she noticed that just seeing other dogs was a challenge for Mistletoe.Still, Bair was confident that the infrastructure was in place to save Mistletoe. The Houston Humane Society was in the process of building a new Behavior Rehabilitation Center.
Five years ago, the couple moved to Texas. Allen became a zookeeper at the Houston Zoo, where Bair took a job in admissions. Then Houston Humane Society president and CEO Gary Poon approached her with a vision for a rehabilitation center for dogs needing extra attention. The two began brainstorming. By November, the Behavior Rehabilitation Center officially launched, complete with a separate, dedicated kennel area for 12 dogs.
A new volunteer program is starting soon to help socialize the dogs. Once adopted, the behavior rehabilitation team provides counseling to new pet owners on how to continue making progress with their dogs.
