Alzheimer's disease was listed as a cause of death for more than 348,000 people . After adjusting for factors like age at death and other sociodemographic factors, Alzheimer's was listed as a cause of death for 1.69% of the general population. "We hypothesized that occupations such as taxi driving and ambulance driving, which demand real-time spatial and navigational processing, might be associated with a reduced burden of Alzheimer’s disease mortality compared with other occupations."

Robert Howard, professor of Old Age Psychiatry at University College London suggested the fact people choose these jobs might reflect they have a brain that needs to degrade more than the average person's before the symptoms of Alzheimer's appear. In addition, women — who are more likely to develop Alzheimer's — are underrepresented in these careers."The proportion of women taxi and ambulance drivers was 10-22% whereas in all other occupations, this was 48%," she said.
