When asked why the New England Patriots did not attempt a Hail Mary from their own 45-yard line on the now-infamous play that ended with Mac Jones six feet underground after a Chandler Jones stiff arm following a Jakobi Meyers lateral , head coach Bill Belichick had a succinct response:Belichick’s decision-making in the moment and brutally honest response to the question represents a telling indictment of second-year quarterback.
Making matters worse for Jones in comparison to 2020 Newton is his lack of dynamism as a runner. Jones has run for 97 yards this season; he is a prototypical, statuesque pocket passer. In 2020, Newton compensated for his shortcomings as a passer by adding an element to New England’s offense as a runner. His 592 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground made the Patriots one of the league’s most potent running teams.
Some will point the finger at Belichick’s mismanagement of the offensive coordinator position as the key reason for Jones’ struggles. Bringing in Matt Patricia to run the team’s offense is a move that most observers deemed a laughable example of NFL cronyism in the moment. It looks even worse now. Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph described the offense as “one a defensive guy would call.” New England has gone from ninth to 25th in offensive DVOA from last year to this year.
