New attack on Microsoft Windows PCs — here’s what you do.
There is a new type of attack targeting Microsoft Windows PC users around the world. The good news is that it’s easy to detect if you know what to look for. The bad news is that most users don’t — and are falling victim at an alarming rate. Here’s what you’ll see on your screen, and what you must do as it means your PC is under attack.starts with a popup message on your PC. It will include a lure to grab your attention and a prompt to do something on your machine.
So what’s a “FakeCAPTCHA.” Again no surprises, it’s is just a form of ClickFix. “Instead of a real CAPTCHA challenge, victims are presented with a fake error, often a ‘Verification Failed – Network Error’ message or a ‘Human Verification’ message.”But the tell is always broadly the same. And once you know to look for it, you shouldn’t ever fall for it.
Don’t ever copy and paste any form of command from a popup. Exit the program right away, and don’t engage with the popup itself. My other recommendation would be a reboot — after saving anything important, to clear the memory on your PC.
