DemConvention viewers in more than 50 cars pulled into a parking lot outside of Washington, D.C.'s RFK Stadium to get the drive-in experience of the convention

After the televised pledge of allegiance, participants honked their car horns repeatedly. The event was organized by the District’s chapter of the Democratic Party and is part of the Democrats’ overall effort to keep Americans engaged in their first-of-a-kind virtual convention.

Austin Naughton, a former social studies teacher from D.C. who has volunteered for party events over the years, showed up Thursday night with memorabilia from the 2016 Democratic convention in Philadelphia. Mr. Naughton said the virtual format made it easier to pay attention to all the programming than it would have been inside a crowded arena.

“In the arena, there's so many other distractions and applause and all that stuff,” said Mr. Naughton, 47 years old.For example, in Philadelphia when he volunteered at the 2016 convention, he spent time as a driver for Jake Sullivan, one of Hillary Clinton’s closest aides. “That was a priceless opportunity to be, like, traveling around with him and speechwriters and going to all the events that he was going to just, it was really amazing," he said.
