Anthony Leonard Platt, better known by his stage name DJ Unk, a prominent figure in Atlanta 's hip-hop scene and a trailblazer of the snap music subgenre, has passed away. He was 42. News of his death was first reported by TMZ on January 24, 2025, and subsequently confirmed by Essence magazine. Platt's wife, also named Anthony Leonard Platt, publicly announced his passing on social media Friday, requesting privacy for her family during this difficult time.

Her post read, 'Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER.'DJ Unk is celebrated for his leadership in the snap music movement. His tracks continue to be popular staples in clubs and on playlists across the country. Born in Atlanta on November 28, 1982, Platt rose to fame in the mid-2000s with his breakout single, 'Walk It Out,' which reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Known for his infectious beats and energetic style, DJ Unk became a defining voice of Southern hip-hop and earned widespread recognition for his contributions to the genre. His 2006 debut album, 'Beat'n Down Yo Block!,' cemented his place in the music industry, featuring hits like 'Walk It Out' and '2 Step,' both of which became iconic club anthems and cultural touchstones for many millennials. He followed this success with his second studio album, '2econd Season,' in 2008, further showcasing his versatility as a DJ, rapper, and producer. Throughout his career, Unk collaborated with notable artists and producers, including DJ Montay and V.I.C., leaving an enduring legacy on the Atlanta music scene. DJ Montay, a prominent producer and artist who worked closely with DJ Unk, paid tribute on Facebook, stating, 'RIP Unk glad to say we was able to make history together.' The Atlanta Falcons also shared a photo of Unk wearing a Falcons jersey, performing at an event. Numerous other artists within the Atlanta hip-hop community expressed their condolences on social media. FOX 5 Atlanta has not yet been able to independently confirm his death with his representatives. While the cause of death remains unconfirmed, reports suggest he battled an undisclosed illness in 2009, which impacted his career.
