Gyraline taps into the power of the iPhone to create a very accurate DIY alignment tool.

From the March/April 2026 issue of Car and Driver. If you're a self-respecting do-it-yourselfer, nothing is more frustrating than having to pay someone else to finish a job you started. For a long time, the cry-uncle point was an alignment.

Sure, there's the string-and-ruler method, but its accuracy is nowhere near that of a shop's proper rack. Now, tech startup Gyraline comes along with a smartphone app to put that capability in your pocket, literally. The Gyraline app harnesses the gyroscope and accelerometer sensors of compatible phones to measure the camber , toe , and caster of a vehicle's tires, effectively turning a phone into a portable alignment rack. The company name is a deliberately misspelled mashup of the words 'gyro' and 'align.' Gyraline is the brainchild of a group of San Antonio–area friends who got tired of paying for an alignment every time they tweaked or overhauled the suspension of their cars. So, in 2023, the group quit their engineering jobs to focus exclusively on the smartphone-app alignment business. We tested Gyraline's first-generation tool, which works only on Apple iPhone 6S and newer models. For $190, users get a 3-D-printed phone holder for taking more accurate measurements, along with lifetime access to the app. When set to Align Toe mode, Gyraline measures the toe using only the wheels' position relative to one another on the vehicle. Pitted against one of the alignment racks at General Motors' proving grounds, Gyraline spit out results for a freshly aligned 2025 GMC Terrain that mirrored those of the pricey rack.We then tested Gyraline's other toe-alignment mode on a 2008 Honda Element that was suffering from a crooked steering wheel when driving straight. We touched our encased iPhone to a reference point at the same spot on either side of the vehicle, against which the app can then compare the orientation of the wheels. After trying a few different reference points, we eventually settled on one that returned readings in line with the Element's symptoms. Once we adjusted the vehicle's tie-rod ends to bring it into spec, we then took it to a local dealer, putting it on the alignment rack there to compare the rack's readings with the ones Gyraline spit out. The result? Most of the toe figures the rack recorded landed within Gyraline's claimed accuracy of 0.05 degree. The camber readings weren't as close, though, differing by between 0.1 and 0.4 degree. Part of the blame lies with the iPhone sensors—to avoid a drift in the readings, you must keep your hands surgeon steady between measurements. The regular tire-alignment caveats apply when using the Gyraline tool. A flat surface is a must, and raising the vehicle between readings will spoil the results. No one said performing your own alignment was easy, but if you're the DIY or penny-pinching type, the Gyraline app is worth it.
