Divinity developers have announced an unexpected update after all the controversy surrounding the game's use of generative AI.
This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available. The development team behind Baldur's Gate 3 and the newly announced upcoming Divinity RPG have recently been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
After comments made by CEO Swen Vincke regarding the studio's use of AI in Divinity's development, he stands by his initial statements, but admits that "a lot has become lost in translation." To address the concerns head-on, Vincke just announced that developers will host a rare AMA after the holiday season to address the use of AI in the development of Divinity. It's a rare and transparent behind-the-scenes look at a massive in-development project, and one that fans hope will offer some clarification about the studio's practices. Divinity Devs To Host Rare AMA "After The Holiday Break" Presumably in the interest of transparency, Larian Studios' Swen Vincke has announced an official AMA that will take place "after the holiday break," wherein developers will field questions from fans "about Divinity and our dev process directly." This ostensibly includes questions related to Vincke's comments on AI and any major concerns raised over what's happening behind the scenes. Seeing as the game is still a long way off, it's surprising that Larian would pull back the curtain and give players a glimpse at what's going on with Divinity's development process. Much of what's been said about the studio's use of AI has been taken out of context or misunderstood, according to Vincke, with some fans such as Nicola calling the AI backlash "performative outrage." The debate about AI in video games has been heating up lately, with GOTY winner Clair Obscur catching flak over placeholder AI images from Unreal Engine appearing in an early version of the game on release, though these were later replaced. Guillame Broche, head of Sandfall Interactive and Clair Obscur visionary, has staunchly denied the use of AI to replace creative talent. Larian Has Nothing To Hide It's pretty clear from Swen Vincke's response to the AI controversy that Larian Studios has nothing to hide when it comes to their development practices, and an AMA is something that fans probably weren't expecting. Vincke has offered clarification already on the issue in an X post earlier this month: Nobody at Larian Studios is obligated to host an AMA by any means, so it's a good sign that they're willing to address the backlash head on as opposed to offering up apologies. While generative AI in video games is certainly a topic that players need to be thinking about, the controversy surrounding both Clair Obscur and Divinity's use of AI feels a bit contrived given the actual context. There's nuance to the AI conversation when it comes to video games, and unfortunately, many gamers generalize AI use as a universally bad thing that replaces human talent by design. As with Divinity, players tend to jump to conclusions when they hear a project has used AI in any capacity, but it's going to become increasingly difficult to enjoy any modern games with this mindset.
