A new study reveals that successful tree planting initiatives in Kenya must consider the complex needs and preferences of smallholder farmers. The research highlights the importance of promoting diversity in tree species while addressing concerns about wildlife, soil health, and time constraints.

Tree planting is crucial for many countries' climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation goals. Kenya , for instance, aims to plant 15 billion trees by 2032. Integrating trees and shrubs into farmland (agroforestry) offers numerous benefits, including enhanced biodiversity, carbon storage, soil health, food production, and income generation. However, many tree planting initiatives overlook diversity and promote a limited range of species.

A new study led by the University of Exeter investigated the factors influencing Kenyan smallholder farmers' decisions regarding tree and shrub diversity on their land. Researchers interviewed 620 smallholder farmers in the Kakamega forest landscape in Western Kenya. They discovered that crucial factors influencing farmers' decisions included past experiences, the influence of fellow farmers, and their perceived capacity to cultivate diverse tree species. While Kenyan farmers generally expressed a positive outlook on diversifying trees on their farms, the study identified several barriers. Concerns included potential negative consequences like attracting harmful wildlife, damaging soil, limited farm size, time constraints, knowledge gaps, and adherence to local beliefs about trees. The study also revealed that certain farmers were more likely to increase tree and shrub diversity, particularly those with higher education, household headship, higher income, or who relied solely on farming for their livelihood. To foster agroforestry that benefits people, nature, and the climate, policies should address these barriers and support the enabling factors identified by farmers. This approach could be replicated globally, ensuring decision-making incorporates local factors
