Neill Blomkamp is returning to his science fiction roots with a new music video from the dance-pop dream team of David Guetta, Dimitri Vegas, and Loreen."Pum Pum" has everything you'd want from two-and-a-half minutes of Blomkamp chaos: robots, motorcycles, swordplay, and a giant mecha-dinosaur.
Collider can exclusively share new details about the making of the new video, which you can also watch below. The video was directed by Irish filmmaker Ruairí Robinson ; at one point, he was attached to the live-action Akira film, and that seminal cyberpunk work's influences are clearly felt in the new footage. The video for"Pum Pum" stars Swedish singer Loreen as a newly minted cyborg who's not particularly pleased about her transformation at the hands of a back-alley cyberneticist. She goes on a Kill Bill-style roaring rampage of revenge through a crumbling futuristic metropolis, leading to a confrontation with a robotic nemesis with a spooky smile, a deadly katana, and a massive mechanical Tyrannosaurus rex. All of this is soundtracked, of course, by the new track, played diegetically by a six-armed robot DJ;"pum pum" is onomatopoeia for the pounding of one's heart. Director Robinson calls it"...a movie for my boyhood self. i.e., Akira, The Road Warrior, Ghost in the Shell, and Jurassic Park all thrown into a blender. Not ripping them off, but chasing that same pulse I felt watching them as a kid." Who Is Neill Blomkamp? Born in South Africa, Blomkamp moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, at 18 and became a special effects animator, working on projects like Stargate SG-1, First Wave, and Dark Angel. After directing a series of short films promoting the release of Halo 3, he was hired to direct a live-action Halo film produced by Peter Jackson. However, that project fell apart; Jackson, impressed by Blomkamp's talent, produced Blomkamp's feature directorial debut, District 9. An original science fiction film about an underclass of insectoid aliens living in modern-day Johannesburg, District 9 was a surprise critical and box office hit. He followed that up with the science fiction features Elysium and Chappie, the horror film Demonic, and his latest, the video-game-inspired racing film Gran Turismo. Blomkamp is next set to direct a new adaptation of Robert Heinlein's classic military sci-fi novel Starship Troopers.
