District 219 and Mexican consulate offer adults degrees

The adult education program, called Alfabetizacion, is geared toward Spanish-speaking parents and guardians of district students.

This article is available exclusively for our subscribers, who help fund our work at the Chicago Tribune.Niles Township High School District 219 Superintendent Tom Moore and Mexican Consul General Reyna Torres Mendivil cut a ribbon at an event launching an adult education program run jointly through D219, the Hispanic Unity Group and the Mexican Consulate in Chicago.

“We talk about lifelong learning,” Superintendent Tom Moore said at the event to kick off the initiative. “Learning doesn’t end at 18, it doesn’t end at the doors. And we need more programs like this, here, across the country.

Almost two in three of District 219′s 4,600 students speak a language besides English and while Urdu, Spanish, Assyrian and Arabic are the most common, school district information states that its students speak more than 90 languages overall.
