Mendelsohn said representing her district’s values is what’s important. The general election for Dallas mayor and the City Council is May 6. Early voting runs...

Mendelsohn was first elected in 2019, and ran on housing policy and growing property taxes to replace longtime former council member Sandy Greyson.

“I may be the lone voice of fiscal responsibility and government efficiency at times, but I am certainly not the lone voice in our city,” Mendelsohn said. “Groupthink can be a dangerous thing, and having a council member who reflects the values of their district, even if they are a lone vote, is important.”

Before joining the council, Mendelsohn was the executive director of Rebuilding Together North Texas, a nonprofit that offers home repair to low income seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities. She believes that residents making between 80% to 120% of the area median income can find housing in the city. In Dallas, 80% of the area median income for one person was $54,560 last year. Many projects with city-approved tax exemptions set aside half of the units as affordable for those earning 80% to 120% of the area median income, but she questions whether that helps those most in need making less.
