At a press conference in Belfast Mr Byrne said he believed dissidents would use the information to intimidate and target police📹

PSNI Chief Constable Simon Byrne has said he is confident that information on police officers and staff mistakenly released in a major data breach is in the hands of dissident republicans.

Chief Con Byrne said the overnight posting of a redacted document, purporting to be from a major PSNI data leak, on a wall facing a Sinn Fein office in Belfast was the first indication that the workforce data was in the wrong hands. He said: “Our men and women are resilient and resourceful. They must call on all their training and professionalism to counter this ugly consequence of a monumental data breach.

Since this major data breach, and subsequent breach, the PSNI was operating on a working hypothesis that the information on all police officers and staff would end up in the hands of dissidents and organised criminals.“However, it makes it all the more imperative for each and every colleague to exercise maximum vigilance.Meanwhile, Chief Con Byrne insisted the PSNI is “working around the clock” to assess the risk to staff due to dissident republicans obtaining workforce data.
