The Walt Disney Company is hosting events to address public concerns about its DisneylandForward initiative.
“Ultimately, it will be a decision of our city council,” Mike Lyster, chief communications officer for the city of Anaheim, told SFGATE. “But why we're interested in looking at it is that whenever the theme parks expand, it drives new revenue for us.”that we use for libraries, community centers, police and fire comes from visitors,” Lyster explained. “And, of course, the theme parks are our largest visitor attraction.
Essentially, Lyster explained, Disneyland has developed only about 40% of what it could develop with the land it currently holds — but development on the rest of it is restricted by what kind of structure can go where under the guidelines Anaheim laid out in the 1990s ahead of the construction of Disney California Adventure park and Downtown Disney.
“We also as a city have to take a look at making sure that land in our city is maximized and that our residents are seeing the best benefit out of it, even when it's privately held,” he added. “Some of the land we're talking about now, you could view it as underutilized. Most of it serves as parking now, and parking's important, but it could certainly be more productive land if it did actually host theme park-type attractions or a new hotel or entertainment and dining.
While Lyster couldn’t reveal actual numbers, he did indicate that Disney is the largest contributor to sales tax, property tax and hotel tax in the city. Unlikeproject, there will be no public bond or city financing for DisneylandForward. This isn’t the first time Disneyland has proposed a massive expansion.
