December is starting with a bang for Power Rangers fans. A whole new live-action Power Rangers show is now confirmed to be in development at Disney+. This news comes in at the perfect time because No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger, which is slated to be the last Super Sentai show under the original banner, is expected to air its finale in 2026.
For those who are unaware, Power Rangers is the American adaptation of the long‑running Japanese superhero series Super Sentai. The previous announcement arrives just as the Sentai legacy winds down, and it means the fight for justice will continue for a new generation, this time under Disney’s wing for the first time in years. Before the confirmation, rumors had been circulating that the creators behind the new Disney+ Percy Jackson & the Olympians series were working on a new Power Rangers show. And during the blue carpet event for the debut of Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2, showrunners Dan Shotz and Jonathan E. Steinberg were asked if there was any truth to the rumors. Steinberg confirmed to MovieWeb that the rumor is, in fact, true and that the duo is working on a new Power Rangers series. This is great news because they have proven they can handle fantasy series and bring back an old franchise already loved by the masses. Percy Jackson & the Olympians Season 1 holds an impressive 91% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Season 2 has already scored a perfect 100% critic rating based on early reviews. It is still unknown, though, if the new Power Rangers show in development at Disney+ will be a continuation of the original show and serve as the 31st season, or if it will be a reboot with a new cast playing the same franchise favorites Jason, Zack, Billy, Trini, and Kimberly, like the Percy Jackson show did. There’s also the possibility of a complete Power Rangers reboot with a new storyline and a completely original cast of characters. The New ‘Power Rangers’ Show Is the Result of the Netflix‑Hasbro Deal Falling Apart in 2024 The original Power Rangers series ran for 30 seasons. But the universe had become shaky over the past few years. There was previously a connected universe in development, led by Jonathan Entwistle in partnership with Hasbro and Netflix. That plan promised crossovers between television series and feature films, and there was a great deal of anticipation about what could come from such a large‑scale project. Netflix ultimately became the home for Power Rangers Dino Fury and Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, which served as Seasons 28-30, as well as the 30th Anniversary Special Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always. However, grand plans for a full shared universe never fully materialized. In 2024, Hasbro ended its agreement with Netflix for reasons that remain unknown and began seeking a new studio partner. Since then, Netflix has slowly removed most of the Power Rangers content from its platform. The collapse of the deal marked the end of one chapter, but it also opened the door for Disney to take over the franchise. On Netflix, Power Rangers had clearly become something of a niche property, cherished by longtime fans but not reaching a wider audience. Under Disney, however, things could change. With Disney’s vast resources, strong marketing machine, and proven track record of turning franchises into household names, Power Rangers now has the potential to reach a whole new generation of viewers. Most Power Rangers series are available to stream for free on YouTube. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
