Disney is reportedly developing a new adaptation of 'Treasure Island' with an unexpected twist - an Australian surfer theme. The project is in its early stages and is being led by indie filmmaking duo Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz. This news comes after years of speculation about a live-action remake of Disney's 2002 sci-fi take on 'Treasure Planet'.
Disney has a new version of Treasure Island in the works with a surprise twist. Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson has been adapted for film and television over 50 times. Disney already has several takes on the Pirate tale, including a 1950 version of the same name, the animated science-fiction take Treasure Planet, and the beloved Muppet Treasure Island . Even with all the various adaptations, an indie filmmaking duo have a unique take on the source material.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, a version of Treasure Island is now in early development with Los Frikis writing and directing duo Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz. When asked about the transition from indie content to bigger-name films, Schwartz confirms that he and his team are'working on Treasure Island for Disney.' Schwartz calls it'an Australian surfer version of Treasure Island.' He does not seem certain that this adaptation of Treasure Island will happen, using the language'if they ever make it.'
