The once-ambitious Galactic Star Cruiser hotel, which offered a unique interactive role-playing experience, is being transformed into office space for Walt Disney Imagineering. The decision comes after the project faced criticism for its high price tag and lower-than-expected visitor interest.
The Galactic Star Cruiser , a unique hotel and interactive role-playing experience that debuted in March 2022 at Walt Disney World , is being repurposed just over a year after its last voyage. Facing criticism for its hefty price tag (starting at $4,800) and lower-than-expected visitor interest, the ambitious project is reportedly being transformed into office space for Walt Disney Imagineering .
Located behind Hollywood Studios, the elaborate structure will serve as a new creative hub for Imagineers working on several highly anticipated projects across the resort. These include the new Tropical Americas land replacing DinoLand U.S.A. at Animal Kingdom, the new Villains land and Frontierland expansion at Magic Kingdom, and the new Monsters Inc. land at Hollywood Studios. The Galactic Star Cruiser encountered several challenges during its limited run, the most prominent being its price and perceived value. The starting cost for two people was reported to be over $4,800, while a family of four could expect to pay around $6,000. Some speculated that the hotel could have been more successful had it offered additional themed experiences, such as utilizing the Halcyon ship's large dining room for a dinner show or capitalizing on the moody bar-lounge off the lobby. Transportation may have also played a role in the decision to restrict access to the building. Guests had to navigate a bumpy and somewhat claustrophobic journey through backstage areas to reach Galaxy's Edge land, which could only accommodate a limited number of visitors. Furthermore, the main entrance to the hotel's earthly launch pad was situated in an un-themed parking area disconnected from the main park. While office space may seem mundane in comparison to the Galactic Star Cruiser's aspirations, the projects being developed within its walls hold immense potential for future Disney World guests. The new Monsters Inc. land at Hollywood Studios, for example, will feature a ride that travels through the door factory from the beloved film, marking the first-ever suspended coaster for a Disney park. In Magic Kingdom, reimagined Frontierland will incorporate new 'Peter Pan' and 'Cowboy' themed attractions, replacing Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America ferry boat.
