Disney+ viewers have stumbled on a new comfort-sitcom obsession — and it’s one that defined an entire generation of TV viewers. How I Met Your Mother is currently sitting at #9 on Disney+’s global streaming charts, a pretty impressive feat for a show that first premiered all the way back in 2005.
The surge comes as the beloved sitcom makes the leap from Netflix, where it has lived for years, to its new streaming home. With all nine seasons leaving Netflix on December 3, 2025, fans appear to be doing exactly what you’d expect: rewatching Ted Mosby’s entire saga one more time… or discovering it for the first time. Created by Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, How I Met Your Mother follows Ted , a New York architect who narrates the absurdly detailed story of how he met his children’s mother. Classic Schmosby. The series was a massive hit throughout its run, earning an 84% critics' score and 85% audience score, even if its series finale remains one of the most hotly debated endings in sitcom history. Harris, in particular, became a breakout favorite, earning four Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and multiple Creative Arts Emmy wins for his performance as Barney. What Other Sitcoms Are Worth Watching? The renewed attention also highlights just how durable the show’s appeal remains. The jokes still land, the chemistry still works, and for better or worse, Ted’s romantic obsession still sparks debate. And while the spin-off How I Met Your Father — starring Hilary Duff — tried to extend the franchise in 2022 with callbacks, Easter eggs, and returning characters, it ultimately lasted just two seasons before being canceled. Still, the original clearly doesn’t need help staying relevant. Its Disney+ chart performance suggests How I Met Your Mother is effectively filling the sitcom-sized hole left by Friends, especially for viewers craving ensemble comedies set in New York with big personalities, running gags, and an emotional throughline. If you’re in the mood to keep that vibe going, there’s no shortage of similar comfort watches. Friends itself remains available on HBO Max, while The Big Bang Theory offers another long-running friend-group sitcom — one that has proven so successful it’s already spawned Young Sheldon, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, and yet another spin-off that's currently in development.
