Free streaming has a funny way of softening old franchise wounds. Shane Black’s 2018 entry, starring Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen, and Sterling K. Brown, is currently trending on Tubi in the United States.
The film has been trending throughout the past week on the ad-supported free streaming platform, peaking at #7 on May 7, #8 on May 8, #6 on May 9, and #5 on May 10, before returning to #6 on May 12. That chart run, although not major, matters because the movie’s original reputation was rough.
It had franchise recognition, a major genre filmmaker, a large ensemble, and a big mythology swing, yet its theatrical run never turned into the reset the studio needed. It grossed $160.5 million worldwide against an $88 million budget, including $51 million domestic and $109.5 million internationally, which made it look commercially exposed for a brand-name sci-fi action revival. Over at Rotten Tomatoes, however, the film sits at 34% critics' score and a 32% audience score.
The movie is The Predator, and its plot circles the alien hunters' chaos on suburban Earth after a boy accidentally triggers their return, forcing ex-soldiers and a scientist into a genetically upgraded Predator crisis. The Tubi performance does not erase the misfire, but it changes the afterlife: Eight years later, the film works better as a free, chaotic franchise curiosity than it did as the future of the franchise.
