“Welcome to Casa Madrigal, where all are exceptional, fantastical, magical…except Mirabel,” flashes across the screen over a Latin beat. Mirabel — whose adorable green eyeglasses and mop of dark curly hair will surely be featured on the dolls and action figures that will likely end up on every kid’s wishlist this holiday season — is voiced by Stephanie Beatriz offame.
Mirabel is the only member of her family who doesn’t have magical powers. “Gift or no gift, I am just as special as the rest of my family,” she declares in the trailer, to which another character hilariously replies, “Maybe your gift is being in denial.” I think we can safely predict that this movie is going to focus on how Mirabel finds out what her gift is, whether it’s magical or not in the end.
