Disney's 'Lilo & Stitch' Live-Action Remake Finally Sets a Streaming Date

Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch remake is officially making its way to Disney+ after becoming the first Hollywood film of 2025 to cross $1 billion worldwide. The box office juggernaut earned $416.2 million domestically and $584.

8 million internationally, for a global total of $1.001 billion against a $100 million budget. The film also marked the first Hollywood release to achieve the milestone since Moana 2 in 2024, and helped Disney set a record-breaking Memorial Day weekend with a $183 million four-day opening. The movie stars Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, Chris Sanders, with Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis, while introducing Maia Kealoha as Lilo. The streaming debut will give audiences another chance to experience director Dean Fleischer Camp’s heartfelt, big-screen take on the classic 2002 animated film, which follows a lonely Hawaiian girl, Lilo, and her unlikely bond with a genetically-engineered alien named Stitch. While the remake stayed close to the original, Stitch’s chaos, heart, and charm have clearly stood the test of time. The success has already sparked a sequel, with original co-creator Chris Sanders returning to write a brand-new story not based on previous Lilo & Stitch follow-ups. Sanders, who voiced Stitch in both animated and live-action versions, will not direct but is expected to be heavily involved creatively. Producer Jonathan Eirich will also return. Is 'Lilo and Stitch' Worth Seeing? The film secured a decent rating of 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, while the audience score for the film is 92% positive from 10,000+ verified reviews. Collider's Aidan Kelley wasn't one of those happy people, however, claiming that the film was a"redundant and frustrating" live-action take on the original film. "Some may argue that constant comparisons to the original picture are unfair, as a remake, perhaps, should be judged on its own merits. There is truth to that, but when a movie such as this feels so intrinsically hellbent on emulating the original as much as possible, with only arbitrary details changed to make it feel like a different movie in the smallest of ways, it's genuinely difficult not to compare the two. The references to the original are just so abundant that judging the film on its own merits is hard because it's pulling from those of another film...
