But this is the reality for millions of Americans, and it’s a reality that’s only going to expand as the planet gets warmer and warmer. FEMA isn’t just a California issue; it’s a national issue. Every morning, I will continue to check the fire maps and pray that San Diego is safe.
But I shouldn’t have to also worry about whether there will be federal support if the flames reach my doorstep. No one should. To dismantle FEMA would be a betrayal of the government’s most basic responsibility: to protect its citizens.
