The author argues against the dismantling of FEMA, highlighting its vital role in providing relief during disasters like wildfires, which are increasingly frequent and severe in California and across the US.

It’s easy for some who don’t live in fire-prone areas to dismiss these concerns. They don’t smell the smoke lingering in the air or pack go-bags for their children. But this is the reality for millions of Americans, and it’s a reality that’s only going to expand as the planet gets warmer and warmer. FEMA isn’t just a California issue; it’s a national issue. Every morning, I will continue to check the fire maps and pray that San Diego is safe.

But I shouldn’t have to also worry about whether there will be federal support if the flames reach my doorstep. No one should. To dismantle FEMA would be a betrayal of the government’s most basic responsibility: to protect its citizens.
