We chat with Matt Stawski, director of paramountplus' new BluesClues film, BluesBigCityAdventure, about all things Blue in addition to his work on some iconic music videos:

Generations of children grew up with Blue's Clues, the iconic Nick Jr program that first debuted in 1996. The show was initially hosted by Steve Burns, and then by Donovan Patton for its final few years.

One of my best friends in the world is a 90-year-old woman who's never heard of Blue's Blues, but I'm gonna show her this movie because I know she'll get a kick out of the musical sequences and Josh's fantastic performance. And when they all come together, with all the animated characters, too, it's beautiful chaos. They're all so excited to see each other, they help each other out, they have their own funny sense of humor. When we were shooting with Steve and Donovan, they are like Abbott and Costello. It's incredible to watch them riff off each other. Some of the pretzel jokes in the movie, those are just riffs, they came up with that stuff on the spot. Steve and Donovan are great at improv.

Matt Stawski: Oh, a snap of their fingers. For sure. The only thing, with Steve, was that we talked on Zoom about this. While we were setting up the cameras for the first shot with Steve, and we were talking about Steve talking to the camera as if it's an adult. Since all of Steve's fans are grown up now. So when you first see Steve, and he's talking to the camera, he's talking to the 25-30 year olds.

Matt Stawski: It's still a guy in a purple shirt talking to a bar of soap and a salt shaker in the middle of New York, and people are turning their heads, looking at all of it. We took a lot from Elf, too. When Will Ferrell is walking around NYC and everyone's looking at him, it's kind of the same thing. They came from another land and they're not used to New York, so there's some parallels there. Matt Stawski: Yup, that's the original. Nick was the original Mr.

Matt Stawski: Yeah, the music video experience was huge on it. There's a handful of directors who come from music videos and go to features. That world is pretty cutthroat. It was definitely bootcamp. You're given a very small budget, and you usually only get one day to shoot an entire music video. A lot of times, the video will consist of a full band performance, as well as a narrative element that needs to be shot, and sometimes green screen elements and graphical elements.
