We chat with HauntedMansion director Justin Simien about how his own experience with New Orleans shaped his approach to the latest Disney Parks ride-inspired movie, and which homage was the toughest to pull off:

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Disney's Haunted Mansion may count the theme park ride and Eddie Murphy movie among its chief inspirations, but director Justin Simien was equally moved by his mother's New Orleans upbringing and the rich history of the city. Though he did not write the screenplay, which was penned by Katie Dippold, he infused his direction with a spirituality and cultural mix known intimately to those of Creole descent.

Justin Simien: Yeah, definitely. I mean, this is where the mansion is set. When you go to Disneyland, it's in New Orleans Square. Some of that's just already there. Speaking of the ride itself, it really does feel like you're on it at times with all the different Easter eggs. How many times did you have to ride Haunted Mansion to get it right?

I really love how grief is such a strong motivator in the film. I know that's already baked into the script, but how do you thread the needle between a very realistic depiction of moving forward, and then still nail the comedic bits? The cast is full of all-stars, but I think that the biggest star is Chase. I'm obsessed. He was so great.
