We chat with director Jimmy Giannopoulos about portraying the different natures of online relationships in his new horror film AloneAtNight, starring Ashley Benson:
There's no telling who's on the other side of the computer screen, and Vertical Entertainment's new horror film, Alone At Night, emphasizes this notion through a young woman's online modeling career. After ending her relationship, Vicky gets some much-needed space when she retreats to her friend's remote cabin in the woods. She continues modeling for her customers on an adults-only streaming website but soon realizes that she isn't as isolated as she initially thought.
Jimmy Giannopoulos: It was during COVID. Myself and one of the producers, Raul, were at Ashley's house in Los Angeles and we were actually developing something different. It was more like a cross-country, Natural Born Killers vibe movie. But it was COVID, so everybody's like, "Well, that ain't gonna happen. You can't be going from state to state into prisons.
I remember in that moment, just thinking...I know that this reality sh*t is scripted, and I know that it's there for us to watch it and be like, "These people are so horrible," but my neighbor might be a serial killer. We're actually horrible, and we're creating this content on TV to make us feel like they're horrible, not us.
I was scrolling, and then I saw Jon, and I'm like, "Wait a minute. I should've called Jon first. This is crazy." And I'm like, "Let me just give this a shot. Let me just see." I'm thinking he's going to say, "It's not for me, bud," but I'm just like, "Jon, I could really, really use this favor right now." So many things came together because I got so excited when I pictured him in it.
It's not always about sex and there are other reasons. That, to me, stuck out, because that actually changes the way pop culture presents these sorts of things as only certain things. When you say OnlyFans, you don't think, "Oh, someone goes on there because they want to just talk to somebody." That's not it. There's more to this. It's just a platform, you can do whatever you want with it. There are different reasons why people get on these things.
